The Enterprise returns to Spacedock to be decommissioned. When he gets there, he meets with Ambassador Sarek, who asks him why he left Spock's body on Vulcan, when his mind could still go on. Kirk discovers that Spock implanted his katra (his mind) in McCoy, which explains McCoy's strange behaviour. He asks the Starfleet Commander for the Enterprise, to retrieve Spock's body, but his request is denied. The crew of the Enterprise has been split up - Scotty is working on the Transwarp Drive on the U.S.S. Excelsior, and Uhura is a Transporter Operator on Spacedock. Meanwhile, McCoy is trying to arrange passage to the Mutara Sector (the location of the Genesis planet) to retrieve his body, when he is placed in custody by Starfleet Security. Kirk decides to break McCoy out of the holding cell and steal the Enterprise to return to the Genesis planet, while Scotty sabotages the Excelsior so that they cannot pursue the Enterprise. The U.S.S. Grissom is a science vessel, assigned to surveying the Genesis planet. However, a Klingon Commander, Kruge, wishes to learn the secret of Genesis, and he destroys the Grissom, leaving only David Marcus and Saavik alive on the Genesis planet - they beamed down after they discovered Spock's burial tube with Spock gone. The Enterprise manages to escape from Spacedock and avoid capture by Captain Sykes and the U.S.S. Excelsior, but when they encounter the Klingon ship in orbit of the Genesis planet, the Enterprise is quickly overpowered, and they have no choice but to surrender and allow the Klingons on board as he is holding David, Saavik and Spock hostage on the surface of the planet. This means that they have to self-destruct the Enterprise. All but 2 or 3 of the Klingon crew beam over to the Enterprise, which is deserted, as Kirk and party have beamed down to Genesis. David reveals to Saavik that he used protomatter to solve certain problems in making the Genesis torpedo operational, but protomatter has made the planet unstable. Kruge beams all but Kirk and Spock up to the Klingon Bird-Of-Prey, but Kirk manages to outwit Kruge and beam up to the Bird-of-Prey. They travel to Vulcan, where Sarek requests the refusion of Spock's mind into his body, a risky process because McCoy is not a Vulcan. Despite this, the process is successful, and Spock is back (more or less) as he was, but wondering why he has been rescued, as it is illogical for the good of the one to outweigh the good of the many - Kirk and the rest of the crew will have to face a court-martial for their actions in rescuing him. |
