Synopsis: |
Genesis is an experimental device that could transform a lifeless planet into a planet capable of supporting humanoid. In order to test the Genesis Torpedo, an uninhabited planet must be found. The U.S.S. Reliant is on a mission to find such a planet. Ceti Alpha VI seems to be the answer. Captain Terrell and Ensign Chekov beam down to the surface, only to find Khan Noonien Singh, exiled to Ceti Alpha V fifteen years ago. They are told that Ceti Alpha VI exploded, shifting the orbit and turning Ceti Alpha V into a desert. Khan implants Ceti Eels into them, which make them extremely susceptible to suggestion. He learns of Genesis, and wants to possess its secret. He beams up to the Reliant with the rest of his party, and exiles the crew of the Reliant to the surface of Ceti Alpha V. He intends to seek revenge on Admiral Kirk for exiling him to Ceti Alpha V fifteen years ago, by killing him and his crew. The Reliant heads for Regula I, the science laboratory where Genesis is being developed, but Dr. Carol Marcus, the project leader does not want to give up Genesis, although Chekov informs her that the order comes from Admiral Kirk. They prepare to leave, but Reliant arrives before they are all able to evacuate, and Khan tortures the people in order to find Genesis - the main memory banks on Regula I have been wiped. However, none of them will tell him its location. Meanwhile, Kirk, who is now in charge of Starfleet Academy, supervises a three-week cadet training mission aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, when he receives a partially jammed signal from Carol Marcus trying to confirm the order to test Genesis on Ceti Alpha V, Kirk becomes suspicious and takes command of the Enterprise, heading for Regula I. En route, he encounters Khan, who nearly destroys him; they are saved by the fact that Kirk knew how to take command of the U.S.S. Reliant using the computer prefix code. Once there, he discovers the remnants of the spacelab's crew - all dead, along with Captain Terrell and Ensign Chekov. They manage to discover that the last people beamed out to deep inside the Regula planetoid, which is lifeless. There they discover the second stage of Genesis, along with Carol and David Marcus. On the Enterprise, Spock tricks Khan into believing that the Enterprise is completely disabled and unable to beam Kirk and party up from Regula. After two hours, the Enterprise manages to restore partial power and beam up Kirk and party from Regula I. However, Reliant is chasing them around the planetoid, and can outrun and outgun them. They head for the Mutara Nebula, where shields and sensors won't function. Kirk manages to outwit Khan, who activates the Genesis device. However, the torpedo explosions have disabled main power - the Enterprise won't be able to escape the explosion. Spock sacrifices his own life to restore main power - 'The good of the many outweighs the good of the few ... or the one.' |
