The Enterprise sets out to encounter the energy cloud, but the Warp Drive malfunctions, and creates a dangerous and unstable wormhole which nearly destroys the Enterprise.

Meanwhile, on Vulcan, Spock (having retired from Starfleet) is on Vulcan undertaking a discipline to purge all emotion. However, he senses intelligence in the energy cloud, and leaves Vulcan to rendezvous with the Enterprise. When he arrives, he informs Kirk of his finding, and Kirk allows Spock to return to Starfleet. Spock then manages to correct the problem in the Warp Drive, and they resume their course towards the energy cloud.

Inside the energy cloud, they discover that it possesses intelligence, and calls itself "V'Ger". It takes control of Lieutenant Ilia's body, and uses it as a probe. It believes that its creator is on Earth, and is prepared to destroy all the "carbon units" (humans) on Earth to find its creator. Kirk, Decker, Spock, McCoy and Ilia venture to the heart of V'Ger,. where they discover that it is actually the space probe Voyager VI, launched from Earth more than 300 years ago, its missions: to collect data and transmit it to its creator. The energy field was created to allow it to complete its mission. V'Ger wishes to join with its creator, and Decker sacrifices his life to join with it. He is listed as "missing".
